Lake City is a city in Wabasha County, Minnesota along Lake Pepin, a wide portion of the Mississippi River. The population was 4,950 at the 2000 census. A portion of Lake City extends into Goodhue County. The city advertises itself as the birthplace of water skiing, which Ralph Samuelson invented there. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.1 km (4.3 mi). 11.0 km (4.2 mi) of it is land and 0.2 km (0.1 mi) of it (1.40%) is water. As of the census2 of 2000, there were 4,950 people, 2,131 households, and 1,402 families residing in the city. The population density was 450.8/km (1,166.9/mi). There were 2,347 housing units at an average density of 213.7/km (553.3/mi). The racial makeup of the city was 96.81% White, 0.63% African American, 0.40% Native American, 1.11% Asian, 0.28% from other races, and 0.77% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.22% of the population.
